A Bit of Barn

Who doesn’t love a barn? They fill our senses with rustic romance.

Situated on a beautiful piece of wooded property, this home was designed to feel like a barn inside. Sustainability was at the foremost thoughts of the builder back in the 70’s. The wood floor was milled from trees cut down on site. Barn beams from the local area welcome when one walks into the front door. I personally love that the upper rooms all look over the main floor, with working barn sash type windows.

The challenge in the spaces in which I worked were to make sure the barn theme was connecting throughout the new designs and it was quirky. QUIRKY? I love it!! The outcome was a milder version of quirky…but nonetheless, a very fun project to work on with great homeowners.

Kitty & Company designed four new spaces for these clients:

  1. Light kitchen remodel, including a new backsplash, flooring, a new open pantry and mudroom area
  2. Master Suite, including enlarging the area by adding an entry foyer into the suite, a completely remodeled master bathroom, and a master closet.
  3. Powder Room/Laundry Hall – relocated the laundry machines into a great hall niche across from the new powder room space we carved out of an old bathroom.
  4. Guest Bathroom -complete remodel turning a pseudo bath/laundry room into this great space with warm quartzite and rounded tub.

We added working barn sashes to the master suite, mixed woods on the floors, designed and custom made sliding barn doors -even one for the master shower, and custom blended a kitchen backsplash. Even though it hadn’t come to fruition by the completion of these projects, we also designed a custom railing for their upstairs hallways and stairways, changed lighting fixtures and more.
